When one thinks of Texas, images of palm trees, grass skirts, coconuts, and beaches don't come to mind. But one particular production company, based here in Austin, has brought a taste of the tropical island to the Lone Star state.

Indeed, Hawaii is here in Texas, Tropical Productions Entertainment or Hula Halau Ka'epa is a multi-cultural theatrical performing arts company that has tantalized audiences all over the country for over 20 years with their unique style of entertainment.

Bringing exotic cultural entertainment from around the world has been their specialty. Tropical Productions performs a wide variety of dances from Asian Pacific countries like Polynesia, Micronesia, Japan, Philippines, China, and Southeast Asia. They also perform dances from the Americas such as Brazil, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Trinidad, and Jamaica.

"We are best known for our Hawaiian dances," says Hawaiian native Keito St. James, director of Tropical Productions Entertainment and owner of the Keito Academy of Ethno-Cultural Performing Arts.

"Hula Halau Ka'epa is the name of our school. Hula means dance, halau means school, and Ka'epa means the edge of a new beginning. We picked this meaning because a lot of the people came from different backgrounds and are working together, to create a new experience.

Tropical Productions Ka"epa  has its humbled beginnings on UT campus in the late '80s starting with four dancers. Now the company is comprised of over 60  dancers and actors known as "dactors" as well as several talented musicians that are part of the company's percussion ensemble. Their music encompasses rhythms of the South Pacific and Afro-Caribbean.

The diversity of the company's performers, with backgrounds in theater, dance, modeling, music, and productions, has brought the group to new heights. They have performed at new venues and states such as Sea World at San Antonio, Treasure Bay Casinos at Mississippi and Louisiana Swamp Romp. New York , Atlanta, New Orleans  Philadelphia , Boston ,Tennessee  ,Kansas
This has also opened doors in the film and theater industry.

"The company's ethnic diversity is a plus. Having dancers with many cultural backgrounds from countries such as Philippines, Trinidad, China, Hawaii, Vietnam, Mexico, Micronesia, and the Americas makes a very good mix in the salad bowl of commercial entertainment," says Mr. St. James.

His school, the Keito Academy of Ethno-Cultural Performing Arts teaches and lectures on a number of dance styles such as Polynesian dance, afro-Caribbean, and salsa. For those who are interested in learning more about Tropical Productions Entertainment, contact Keito St. James.
